International Workshop on Multibunch Instabilities
in Future Electron and Positron Accelerators
KEK, Tsukuba, Japan 15 - 18 July, 1997

First Bulletin

March 17, 1997

Dear Colleague,

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, it is my pleasure to invite you to
the International Workshop on Multibunch Instabilities in Future Electron
and Positron Accelerators (MBI97) scheduled to be held at KEK in Tsukuba,
Japan, July 15-18, 1997. Please feel free to pass this invitation to your
colleagues who may be interested in the subjects of the workshop.

As a general trend, electron and positron accelerators have a tendency to
go toward "factory machines", which will result in an extremely high beam
current with a multibunch operation. In this situation, some new beam
instabilities, which we have not encountered in conventional
electron-position colliders, might degrade their machine performance. Such
new instabilities include fast ion instability for the electron beams and
photo electron instability for the positron beams. These instabilities will
possibly impose some difficulties on the factory machines such as B
factories, tau-charm factories, photon factories and also on future linear
colliders. They have been studied by computer simulations in parallel to
beam studies in some existing machines.
The goal of the workshop is to review the results of the theoretical and
experimental studies on the multibunch instabilities in future electron and
positron accelerators. We also plan to discuss about further studies and
effective counter-measures such as fast feedback systems. Although an
emphasis will be placed on the fast ion and photo electron instabilities,
discussions on other multibunch instabilities in the workshop will also be
encouraged.

Our tentative program of the workshop is tabulated below:

                    9:00am - 12:30pm 2:00pm - 5:30 pm evening
Monday, 14 July Registration get together party
Tuesday, 15 July Session Session Reception
Wednesday, 16 July Session Excursion
Thursday, 17 July Session Session
Friday, 18 July Session Concluding plenary

We plan to dedicate one whole plenary session for discussion. In the final
plenary session, we will summarize the findings in the workshop. The
proceedings of the workshop will be published as a KEK report.

Participants can stay either at the KEK guest house or hotels near the
center of Tsukuba city. A limited number of rooms are avaliable at the KEK
guest house.

Detailed informations on travel and accommodation will be sent in a second
bulletin. If you are interested in participating the workshop, please fill
the attached form and e-mail it to the address of mbi97@kekvax.kek.jp by
April 20, 1997. If you prefer, you may also fax it to Ms. Yoko Hayashi at
[81]-298-64-3182. All future correspondence and invitation letters will be
sent only to those who have returned this form. The attendance is
invitation only.

Limited financial support will be available for participants who cannot
otherwise come. We particularly encourage young people to participate the
workshop. Those who need support for travel expenses, accommodation, or
staying expenses should express their request either by sending an e-mail
message or a letter to the address of shin-ichi.kurokawa@kek.jp. Please
describe items and amount for support in details with a short resume and
names of references. We will evaluate each case and notify them as soon as
possible.
Every foreign visitor entering Japan must have a valid passport.
Participants from some countries may be required to have a valid entry
visa. They should apply for it at Japanese Embassy/Consulate in their
countries well prior to the departure. The Organizing Committee is happy to
provide helps.
